Side 1: New York's Magnificent Mountains

New York State is famous for its beautiful landscape. While much of the state has flat land and rolling hills, it is also home to two major mountain ranges and part of a massive mountain system!

The Adirondack Mountains (The North)

In the northern part of New York, you will find the Adirondack Mountains. Unlike most mountains that form in long chains, the Adirondacks are shaped like a giant dome.
  • Fun Fact: They are home to Mount Marcy, which is the highest point in all of New York! It stands 5,344 feet tall.
  • What they look like: These mountains are rugged, covered in thick forests, and filled with thousands of lakes and ponds.

The Catskill Mountains (The South)

Located south of the Mohawk River and west of the Hudson River are the Catskill Mountains. Even though we call them mountains, they are actually a high plateau that has been carved out by water over millions of years. They are a popular place for hiking and skiing.

The Appalachian System

The Appalachian Mountains are one of the oldest and longest mountain systems in North America! They stretch all the way from Alabama in the south to Canada in the north. Many of New York’s smaller hills and the Catskill region are actually part of this huge system.

The "Outsiders"

You might hear about the Rocky Mountains, but you won't find them in New York! The Rockies are located way out in the Western United States, in states like Colorado and Montana.
