A Girl Called Golden
Summary of the Poem
"A Girl Called Golden" by David Bateson is a poem about Betty Cuthbert, a famous Australian runner. Betty was born in Sydney in 1938. As a young girl, she loved to run everywhere she went. She worked very hard and trained on the track to become faster and stronger.
In 1956, Betty went to the Olympic Games in Melbourne. She was incredibly fast! She won three gold medals in the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash, and the relay race. Because of her golden hair and her three gold medals, people called her the "Golden Girl."
Even after a break from running, Betty's spirit was strong. She came back to win a fourth gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 1964. The poem celebrates her hard work and her place as an Australian hero.
