All About Our Families and Sensitivity Towards Others
What is a Family?
A family is a group of people who live together and are related to each other. Families provide us with love, care, and support. Every family is special and unique in its own way!
Types of Families
There are different kinds of families we see around us:
- Nuclear Family: A small family consisting of parents and their children living together.
- Joint Family: A big family where grandparents, parents, uncles, aunts, and cousins all live together in one house. This is common in many Indian homes.
- Single Parent Family: A family where children live with only one parent (either the mother or the father).

Our Relatives and the Family Tree
We have relatives from both our mother's and father's sides:
- Maternal Family: Relatives from your mother's side, like your Nana-Nani (grandparents) and Mama-Masi (uncles and aunts).
- Paternal Family: Relatives from your father's side, like your Dada-Dadi (grandparents) and Chacha-Bua (uncles and aunts).
To understand how everyone is related, we use a Family Tree. It shows different generations—like your grandparents are the first generation, your parents are the second, and you are the third!

How Family Members Influence Us
We learn many things from our family members. They teach us good values and skills:
- Resemblance: You might look like your mother or father. This is called resemblance. Some siblings look exactly the same—they are called twins!
- Values: We learn habits like punctuality (being on time) and kindness from our elders.
- Skills: You might learn a special skill from a family member, like how to embroider (decorating cloth with needle and thread), cook, or sing.
- Adoption: Sometimes, a family brings a child into their home who was not born to them and cares for them as their own. This is called adoption, and it is a beautiful way to grow a family.
Celebrating Special Days
- International Family Day (May 15): A day to celebrate our families and the love we share.
- Children's Day (November 14): Celebrated in India on the birthday of Chacha Nehru, who loved children dearly.
Sensitivity Towards Others
Being sensitive means understanding the feelings and needs of others, especially those who may have physical challenges.
Helping Hands and Tools
Some people may not be able to see, hear, or speak like most of us. They use special tools to help them:
- Braille Script: People who cannot see use their fingers to read raised dots on paper. This system is called Braille.
- Sign Language: People who cannot hear use hand movements and facial expressions to communicate.
- Hearing Aid: A small machine worn in the ear to help a person hear better.

Champions of Spirit
- International Day of Persons with Disabilities (December 3): A day to celebrate the achievements of people with disabilities and ensure they are treated with respect.
- Paralympics: These are international sports competitions for athletes with physical disabilities. These athletes show us that with hard work, anything is possible!

Vocabulary to Remember
- Punctuality: The habit of doing things on time.
- Embroider: To sew beautiful patterns on cloth.
- Entertain: To provide fun or enjoyment for others.
- Generations: People born and living at about the same time (e.g., all children in a family).
