These dams slow down the water and create deep ponds.
In the middle of the pond, beavers build a home called a lodge. A lodge is a dome-shaped house made of sticks and mud. The entrance is underwater, which keeps the beavers safe from predators like wolves or bears. Inside, the lodge is dry and cozy for the beaver family.
Beavers are also very busy finding food. They eat bark, leaves, and water plants. They even store extra branches underwater so they can eat during the cold winter months. By building dams, beavers also help other animals. The ponds they create provide a home for fish, ducks, and frogs. This makes the beaver a very important part of the forest habitat.
