Lesson Plan: Subtracting within 20 Using Counting Strategies
At a Glance
- Grade Level: Grade 7 (adapted for foundational numeracy skills review)
- Subject: Mathematics
- Lesson Title: Subtracting within 20 Using Counting On, Counting Back, and Decomposition
- Class Duration: 50 minutes
Objectives & Learning Outcomes
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
- Subtract within 20 by using strategies such as counting on to 10, counting back to 10, and taking from 10.
- Decompose the subtrahend to count back efficiently and explain their reasoning using visual models.
- Connect subtraction strategies to addition, recognizing the part–part–total relationship.
- Represent and solve real-world subtraction word problems using number paths, number bonds, or manipulatives.
- Clearly communicate their problem-solving strategies through drawings, number sentences, and verbal explanations.
Standards Addressed
- 1.OA.C.6: Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10; use strategies such as counting on, making ten, decomposing a number leading to a ten, using the relationship between addition and subtraction, and creating equivalent but easier or known sums.
- 1.OA.A.1: Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions.
Note: Standards are adapted from Grade 1 to support review or intervention in Grade 7, as referenced in the provided Eureka Math lessons.
Material & Resources Needed
For Teachers:
- Floor Number Path (for class demonstration)
- Digital Number Path removable (downloadable/printable)
- Sample word problems for subtraction within 20
For Students:
- Number Path removables (individual use)
- Unifix® Cubes or similar manipulatives (20 per student)
- Personal whiteboards and dry-erase markers
- Handouts of number bonds and 5-group models (as shown in lesson visuals)
Lesson Preparation:
- Photocopy or print Number Path removables and student pages with 5-groups and number paths for demonstration and practice.
- Ensure manipulatives and whiteboards are distributed before class.
- Prepare a visible class demonstration area for using the Floor Number Path.
Reference: Visuals and material recommendations are drawn from the lesson agendas and sample solutions on pages 1–2 and 11 of Reference 3 (Eureka Math2 Lesson 24) and similar content in Reference 2 (Lesson 23).
