Introduction
Cats are some of the most popular pets in the world. Whether they are sleeping on a sunny windowsill or chasing a feather toy, cats are fascinating creatures. Scientists call the domestic cat Felis catus. They belong to the same family as lions, tigers, and leopards, which is called the Felidae family. Even though your pet cat might look small and cuddly, it shares many of the same traits as its big cousins in the wild!
Built for Hunting
Cats have bodies that are perfectly designed for movement and hunting. Most cats have soft fur that can come in many colors, like orange, black, white, or even stripes called "tabby" patterns.
One of their most important physical features is their whiskers. Whiskers are not just long hairs; they are actually very sensitive touch sensors. They help cats feel their way around in the dark and determine if they can fit through a tight space.
Cats also have sharp claws that are "retractable." This means they can pull their claws inside their paws when they are walking and push them out when they need to climb a tree or catch something. This helps keep their claws sharp and allows them to walk very quietly, which is why we sometimes say cats "skulk" or "prowl."

Cats communicate with humans and other animals in different ways. When a cat is happy and relaxed, it might purr. Scientists believe purring is a way for cats to show they are content or to calm themselves down.
Cats also use their voices to "meow." Interestingly, adult cats rarely meow at other cats; they mostly meow to communicate with humans! They also use body language, like arching their backs when they are scared or rubbing their heads against your leg to show affection and mark you with their scent.
