Long before New York became a state with busy cities and paved roads, the land was home to many groups of Native Americans, including the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) and the Algonquian people. These groups were experts at using the natural world around them. To survive and thrive, they had to adapt to their environment and modify it to meet their needs and wants.

Adapting to the Environment

Adapting means changing your behavior to fit the world around you. Because New York has four distinct seasons and is covered in thick forests, Native Americans used what was available to them.
For example, they built their homes using natural resources from the forest. The Haudenosaunee lived in longhouses, which were large structures made from wooden poles and covered in sheets of elm bark. The Algonquian people often lived in wigwams, which were smaller, dome-shaped homes also made from wood and bark.
Their clothing was another way they adapted. Since deer were plentiful in the forests, they used deerskin to make soft, durable clothes like leggings and moccasins. During the cold winters, they added thick furs from bears or beavers to stay warm.

Modifying the Environment

Modifying means changing the environment to fit your needs. One of the most important ways Native Americans modified the land was through agriculture. They cleared patches of forest to plant gardens.
They are famous for planting the "Three Sisters": corn, beans, and squash. These three plants were grown together in the same mound. The corn grew tall, providing a pole for the beans to climb. The beans added nutrients to the soil that helped the corn grow. The large squash leaves spread across the ground, acting like a blanket to keep the soil moist and stop weeds from growing.
Native Americans also modified the forests using controlled burns. They would carefully set small fires to clear out underbrush. This made it easier to travel through the woods, helped new plants grow that attracted deer for hunting, and prevented larger, more dangerous forest fires from starting.
By understanding the land so well, the Haudenosaunee and Algonquian people were able to create a balanced life that respected and shaped the natural world.
