Lesson Plan: Place Value Addition Strategies

Objective
Students will successfully add three-digit numbers with regrouping by utilizing a place value grid to maintain proper column alignment.
Materials
- Place Value Blocks (Hundreds flats, Tens rods, Ones cubes)
- Pencils and Erasers
- 3-Digit Addition Grid Worksheet (provided below)
Instructional Flow
1. Introduction (5 mins)
Review 2-digit addition with regrouping. Remind students that when the sum in the ones place is 10 or more, we "bundle" those ten ones to create one new ten for the next column.
2. Direct Instruction (10 mins)
Introduce three-digit addition using the H | T | O (Hundreds, Tens, Ones) method. Show students how the grid paper helps keep numbers in their correct houses.
- Example Problem:
- Step 1: Add the ones (). Write the 3 in the ones place and the 1 above the tens column.
- Step 2: Add the tens ().
- Step 3: Add the hundreds ().
3. Guided Practice (10 mins)
Solve the first problem on the worksheet together. Check for proper placement of the "regrouped" tens or hundreds at the top of the grid.
4. Independent Practice (15 mins)
Students work through the 20-problem worksheet. Circulate the room to assist students who struggle with carrying digits over or misaligning columns.
5. Closing (5 mins)
Review problem #10 as a class to discuss regrouping in both the ones and tens places (Double Regrouping).
