All About Families and Supporting Each Other

What is a Family?

A family is a group of people who live together and care for one another. Family members love, support, and help each other in times of need. Every family is special and unique!

Types of Families

There are different kinds of families based on the members who live together.

1. Nuclear Family

A nuclear family is a small family. It usually consists of a father, a mother, and their one or two children living together in one home.

2. Joint Family

A joint family is a large family. In this type of family, grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, and cousins all live together in the same house. It is wonderful to have so many people to play and share with!

3. Single Parent Family

In a single parent family, children live with only one parent—either the mother or the father. This parent takes care of all the needs of the children with lots of love.

Maternal and Paternal Families

We are related to many people through our parents. We use special words to describe these sides of the family:
  • Maternal Family: These are the relatives on your mother’s side. For example, your mother's parents (maternal grandparents) and your mother's brothers or sisters (maternal uncles and aunts).
  • Paternal Family: These are the relatives on your father’s side. For example, your father's parents (paternal grandparents) and your father's brothers or sisters (paternal uncles and aunts).


Supporting Friends with Special Needs

Some people may have difficulty seeing or hearing. We use special tools and scripts to help everyone communicate and learn.

Braille Script

Braille is a special system of reading and writing for people who cannot see. It was invented by Louis Braille. Instead of ink on paper, Braille uses raised dots. People read by feeling these bumps with their fingertips.

Hearing Aids

A hearing aid is a small electronic device worn in or behind the ear. It helps people who have trouble hearing by making sounds louder and clearer. It acts like a tiny microphone and speaker for the ear.
