How Smoking Impacts the Body

Our bodies are amazing machines. To keep them working well, we need to eat healthy food, drink water, and exercise. One thing that is very bad for our bodies is smoking. Smoking involves breathing in smoke from a cigarette. Inside that smoke are thousands of tiny, nasty things called chemicals. These chemicals can hurt almost every part of our body.

Your Busy Lungs

Your lungs are like two pink balloons inside your chest. They help you breathe in fresh air. When someone smokes, the smoke goes down into their lungs. Over time, the healthy pink lungs can turn a dark grey or even black color. This is because of the sticky "tar" in the smoke. People who smoke often find it very hard to run or play sports because they get out of breath very quickly. They might also have a loud, tickly cough that does not go away.

Your Hardworking Heart

Your heart is a strong muscle that pumps blood all around your body. Smoking makes the heart work much harder than it should. It has to beat faster to get oxygen to the rest of the body. This extra work can make the heart tired and weak. A healthy heart is much better at keeping us strong and full of energy.

Teeth, Breath, and Skin

Smoking also changes how a person looks and smells. The chemicals in cigarettes can turn white teeth into a yellowish-brown color. It also makes a person’s breath smell very stinky, like an old ashtray! Even a person’s skin can change. It might become dry and start to look wrinkly much sooner than it should.

Your Senses

Did you know that smoking can change how things taste and smell? People who smoke often cannot smell beautiful flowers as well as others. They might also find that their favorite foods do not taste as yummy as they used to. This is because the chemicals in the smoke dull their senses.

Saving Money and Staying Safe

Cigarettes are very expensive. People who smoke spend a lot of money on them every week. That is money that could be spent on fun things like toys, books, or tasty fruit.
It is also important to know about "second-hand smoke." This is the smoke that comes from the end of someone else's cigarette. Breathing in this smoke can also make you poorly. That is why it is best to stay away from smoky places so your own lungs stay clean and pink.
