Quick Lesson: Introduction to Photosynthesis

Lesson Procedure
1. The Hook (3 Minutes)
Ask students: "If you were stuck on a deserted island, what are the three things you would need to survive?" After a few answers, ask: "What about a plant? Does it need a grocery store?" Lead into the idea that plants make their own food.
2. Mini-Lesson (10 Minutes)
Briefly explain the process using the following "recipe":
- Inputs (Ingredients): Sunlight (Energy), Water ($H_2O$ from roots), Carbon Dioxide ($CO_2$ from air).
- Process: Occurs in the chloroplasts (the green parts of the plant).
- Outputs (Products): Glucose (Sugar/Food for the plant) and Oxygen ($O_2$ released for us).
3. Quick Activity: "The Photosynthesis Shuffle" (10 Minutes)
Divide the class into small groups. Assign each group a part of the "recipe" (Sun, Water, CO2, Glucose, Oxygen). Have them create a 30-second silent skit showing how their part enters or leaves the plant.
4. Wrap-up & Exit Ticket (7 Minutes)
On an index card, students must write the "Photosynthesis Formula" in their own words:

Remind students that while we breathe in oxygen and out carbon dioxide, plants do the exact opposite during this process!
